Centralized backup solution
Background
Over the space of 5 years, a government body had gone from having one server to 20 servers. Each server had been supplied with a local tape drive for backup, thereby making the management of backups and media a difficult and time-consuming task.

Solution
Storage OnLine introduced a solution whereby the backups could be centralised onto one central tape library, thereby minimising the administration required.
Although the backup software utilised by the Government body allowed for the use of differential backups, a strategy of full backups each night was preferred. The volume of data backed up each night from the 20 servers had increased from 100GB to 220GB over the space of a year.
The Overland Neo 2000 library offered an extremely cost effective and scalable solution. The library is modular with each module containing 30 LTO 2 Ultrium slots and up to 2 drives. All operator controls are accessible through a touch screen, graphical user interface. A remote library management tool embedded in the Neo enables the use of a standard browser to view the library and all its functions over the internet/intranet.
Since implementing this solution, the Government body now complete their nightly backup onto one tape per night. The performance of the library has ensured that nightly backups are completed well within the backup window required. The ability to add further drives and modules will ensure that the library can grow as their volumes of data grow, thus safeguarding their investment.
