Desktop/Laptop Back-up

Background

Following a spate of hard disk failures on their desktops, a local Health Authority realised that much of their vital corporate data resided on desktops, which were not backed up.

As many of the desktops resided on remote sites, the Health Authority were reluctant to install file servers on these sites as they would be difficult to administer and backup.

Solution

Storage OnLine introduced a solution whereby the users could continue to store data on their desktops.

Datakeeper is a Windows client-side application that monitors file activity while running in the background. Every time a file is saved to the user’s local hard disk, Datakeeper saves a copy to a secure directory on a local Snapserver Network Attached Storage (NAS) device.

Data backed up from the user’s hard disk is then replicated to the Health authority’s main site each night where it is backed up to tape.

The solution also caters for portable computers. When the portable computer is not connected to the network, Datakeeper will archive backup files in a local directory on that computer. When the portable is reconnected to the network, Datakeeper will move this archive to the local NAS device.
